The Masters Series was created to give students an opportunity for study with some of the world’s greatest instructors. Master teacher, Gabriela Komleva, returns to the Twin Cities this summer for classes in intermediate, advanced, and adult levels. Former prima ballerina, now master-coach of St. Petersburg’s Marinsky(formerly Kirov) Ballet, Ms. Komleva’s residency is unequaled across the country. A teacher of this caliber is usually available only to students pursuing dance as a career in the most prestigious of dance schools. The St. Anthony Performing Arts Guild Masters Series gives everyone a taste” of the exclusive professional ballet world. Lirena Branitski, former member of the Kiev State Opera and Ballet has also graced our studios. Both Ms. Komleva and Ms. Branitski delight in teaching students who have a passion for learning, from avocational adults to pre-professional dancers. Come, enrich your soul!

Gabriela Komleva

Gabriela Komleva is one of the top international ballerinas of her generation. While she was on the Kirov roster, she commanded an unusually wide repertory, including most of the ballerina roles in the 19th Century Classics, from Swan Lake to The Sleeping Beauty - to La Bayadere, whose heroine Nikiya she performed in the 1979 BBC film, on the occasion of the ballet's 100th anniversary.

In addition, she is known for her many leading roles in experimental modern ballets.

Ms. Komleva danced with many partners throughout her long career, including both Rudolph Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov (Baryshnikov requested her as his ballerina for his debut in Don Quixote).

Since 1989 when she retired from the stage, Ms. Komleva has had a second career as ballet teacher, rehearsal mistress, coach, mounting many ballets from the Russian classical ballet repertory. In addition to her duties at the Kirov, Ms. Komleva is also a noted television personality in St. Petersburg, having originated and hosted a series of programs on dance, and she is a distinguished full professor of dance at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. She is also an active guest rehearsal mistress at the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. She is especially in demand in North America, where she is considered an unusually pure representative of Vaganova classical ballet technique and Russian ballet style.
