St. Anthony School
of Dance provides quality dance training in a wholesome environment
which fosters an appreciation of dance as an art form, not an
exercise in competition.
Professional
classical ballet training at St. Anthony School of Dance is
based on the Vaganova Method. At the turn of the 20th century,
the Imperial School of Russian Ballet was the system of classical
ballet training in Russia. This system was responsible for producing
great artists such as Anna Pavlova, Michael Folkine, Vaslav
Nijinsky, George Balanchine and others. The Imperial School
system incorporated soft and gracefully elegant movements from
the French school and the dynamism, strength and endurance of
the Italian school under Enrico Cecchetti. In the early 1920s,
Agrippina Vaganova sought to consolidate the teaching of the
Russian school while gleaning the best from the French and Italian
schools. Natalia Dudinskaya, Vaganovas pupil wrote, ...
the single style, the dance handwriting, which manifests
itself most clearly in the harmonious plasticity of movement
and the expressiveness of the arms, in responsive suppleness
and at the same time the iron aplomb of the body, in the noble
and natural placement of the headthese are the distinctive
traits of the Vaganova school. Vaganovas system
has since become the foremost method for the entire Russian
choreographic school which was renamed the Vaganova Choreographic
Institute. Her training has gained worldwide interest as the
method that produced the luminaries Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia
Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Vaganova herself by no means
regarded her instructional system as immutable. Guided by her
vast experience, Vaganovas pupils and their pupils are
enriching and emending this system in their creative practice.
In direct ballet lineage from Vaganova, Gabriela Komleva, Prima
Ballerina of the Maryinsky Theatre, has imparted her training
to students and teachers of the Saint Anthony School of Dance
for the past eight years.

Yesterday I saw
a double rainbow. The promise and blessing is overwhelming when
you see the vivid colors displayed in such grandeur. I am reminded
of the opening vision of this school in 1982the blessing
of Gods provision for us. As a teacher, manager and owner
I have worked to sustain the vision, to value people and foster
the joy of dance. Now I am passing on this blessing to Georgia
Amdahl. She will reflect all the colors of this mission with grace
and compassion. The foundation of quality instruction in a wholesome
environment will be embellished as she promotes the growth of
artistry and training. I am pleased to continue to serve as a
teacher, advisor and board member. I give my support and prayers
for the rainbow of Gods blessings on the school for years
to come.
Sonja Hinderlie, Advisor
As I locked the
studio last night and glanced back up the old 1917 stairway,
I had a flashback to May, 1986, when I first walked up these
stairs. I was an adult dancer looking for a school dedicated
to dance as an art. I was warmly greeted by Meri Skinner, the
receptionist, and Marius Andaházy, the director/owner.
They both encouraged me to continue my dance training. For the
past 15 years I have continued training in this same studio
space. The walls and the floors speak out a myriad of memoriesespecially
the passing on of the Andaházy School of Classical Ballet
to the St. Anthony School of Dance in 1996. I am awed and feel
blessed, to be owning/directing this school. I am grateful for
my dear friendship with Sonja and her wise and gentle mentoring
the past two years. I am grateful for the inspirational words
of Meri and Marius on that day in 1986. Keep dancing way
into your old age and discover its joy. So, I look forward
to our 19th season as I carry forth the legacies passed on to
me from both the Andaházys and Sonja.

Owner/Executive Director
The 2001-02 season promises to be exciting, dramatic change
and growth as we move ahead with strategic plans for fiscal,
educational, artistic, and facility development. By changing
the dates for The Golden Bough, we hope not only to improve
our market position, but to open up the potential for new repertoire
and additional performance opportunities, with our sights set
on having a four-performance season by 2004. A major change
that affects your student directly is the progression of our
most advanced students to the Level 6 material of the Vaganova
syllabus. in addition, we have scheduled character classes for
Levels 2 through 6. Moreover, I will personally be mentoring
2 hand-picked Level 6 students, training them in our teaching
methods using the Vaganova syllabus. i am very excited by these
developments, and am thrilled with the level of commitment shown
by
students, my colleagues, the staff, and the parents, The seriousness
of our students towards the artistic work is tremendously gratifying;
excitement is palpable; and the comraderie is not just the frosting
on the cakeit makes all things possible. God bless
you all!
